This S-shaped Southeastern nation is the eastern most country on the Indochina peninsula. The coastline of Vietnam is about 2,000 km long. The country has over 70 islands and islets. Since the Vietnamese language has six different tones, the same word can have six different meanings depending on the tone used to pronounce it. Along with Vietnamese, English is popular and is spoken mainly by youngsters. Some people also speak French, Russian and Chinese.
Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city and located in the southeastern region of Vietnam. The Ho Chi Minh Museum is located in a French colonial building on the Saigon River. It narrates the history of Ho Chi Minh, the father of modern Vietnam.
Hanoi was the capital of the French colony for over six decades, and the city has exquisite colonial buildings like the Grand Opera House, the Cathédrale St-Joseph, Hotel Sofitel Metropole, the State Bank of Vietnam, and the Presidential Palace.
Six of the world's biosphere reserves are located in Vietnam. They are Can Gio Mangrove Forest, Cat Ba, Kien Giang, Cat Tien, Red River Delta, and Western Nghe An. Vietnam offers a great many options from scuba diving and yachting to bird watching and boating and trekking for vacationers.
