Jakarta is the capital city of the Republic of Indonesia. Indonesia has over 300 ethnic groups that speak about 200 different languages. This variety is marked in the capital city too. The people’s cultural, linguistic, and religious traditions can be seen here. The city is located on the northwestern coast of the Java Island on the Jakarta Bay. It stands at the mouth of the Ciliwung River.
Ragunan zoo in South Jakarta is in the southern part of the city. There are animals like the Komodo lizard, banteng, tapir, Javan tiger, wild ox and many species of birds. The Ragunan Wildlife Reserve was set up by a Dutch animal lovers group. You can also find endangered animal like the Sumatran tiger, dwarf buffalo and Bird of paradise.
Thousand Isles near Jakarta is a popular spot. Paradiso, as it’s called, has four islands: Kahyangan, Bidadari, Onrust and Kelor. There waters around are a true paradise for scuba divers and skin divers. You can take a ferry or boat from Tanjung Priok or Pasar Ikan (Sunda Kelapa). Islands like Pulau Bidadari, Pulau Laki, Pulau Anyer, and Pulau Putri are the most interesting ones. Pulau Tanjung near Putri has an airstrip too.
There is a modern aquarium, ‘Sea World’ that exhibits the marine life found throughout Indonesia. You’ll find Freshwater World, Micro world and a theatre there. It screens movies about the underwater world. The Antasena Tunnel is a walk-through acrylic tube that gives first hand experience of life under the sea. There are over 4,000 fishes and sharks in the aquarium.
The dive sites near Jakarta are a great pleasure to divers and those who snorkel. Boating, yachting and surfing are popular too.
